Upcoming games, old games, future of games, the industry, reviewers, and teamkills. Anything with bits and controllers.

There's a new issue of one of the three Game Studies journals out today. Its just got four articles, which is pretty bad. One of them is about Final Fantasy and racial difference, but doesn't mention Japan. It also asserts that in Dungeons and Dragons, skills are ranked out of 20.

This is a field that struggles to be seen as legitimate.

Interesting, but will they leave in the scene where he finds Muhammad in hell, rent open from chin to "where one breaketh wind" as punishment for creating a false religion?

Image

Quote:
A cask by losing centre-piece or cant
Was never shattered so, as I saw one
Rent from the chin to where one breaketh wind.

Between his legs were hanging down his entrails;
His heart was visible, and the dismal sack
That maketh excrement of what is eaten.

While I was all absorbed in seeing him,
He looked at me, and opened with his hands
His bosom, saying: "See now how I rend me;

How mutilated, see, is Mahomet;
In front of me doth Ali weeping go,
Cleft in the face from forelock unto chin;

And all the others whom thou here beholdest,
Disseminators of scandal and of schism
While living were, and therefore are cleft thus.

A devil is behind here, who doth cleave us
Thus cruelly, unto the falchion's edge
Putting again each one of all this ream,

When we have gone around the doleful road;
By reason that our wounds are closed again
Ere any one in front of him repass.

EA announced major cuts three days ago, it's a bad time to be working in gaming. This is on top of steady industry wide reductions over the last year. Anyone left alive after this carnage immediately set sail for the mystical Isle of Blizzard where everyone is happy, the birds sing a pretty song and there is always music in the air.

Quote:
Cost Reduction Plan

EA has announced a plan to narrow its product portfolio to provide greater focus on titles with higher margin opportunities.

This action will result in the closure of several facilities and a headcount reduction of approximately 1,500 positions, of which 1,300 are included in a restructuring plan. The majority of these actions will be completed by March 31, 2010. This plan will result in annual cost savings of at least $100 million and restructuring charges of $130 to $150 million.

EA remains committed to delivering high quality games for consumers and leading the industry in the growing digital direct gaming sector.

At the same time they bought PlayFish, some company that makes browser games for Facebook, for $300 million, so it's a good time to be making that... stuff I guess.

I don't know what that is, but I don't like the sound of it.

I was going to say I don't have a Facebook, but after you said that Aeon I remember making one like a year ago to "catch up with" some girl I went to school with because she kept bugging me about it, but after I did I found out it was like Erich said and everyone we went to school with back in the 80's, no matter how hot they were, looks like a melting pumpkin now. Except for me. So I stopped using it.

Well I'm still enjoying jerking off to my facebook friends. What did you old folks do when you wanted to whack off to some girl in hs that paid you no mind? Memory? Yearbook photo? It must have been hard, back then.

Imagine this: you're playing one of Splinter Cell Conviction's many "choose your own torture" sequences, as described by Ubisoft's Jeffrey Dickstein. As you're slamming a terrorist's face into a urinal, you might ask yourself, "is this the new Degree deodorant I should buy?" (Seriously, these are his words.)

This is actually the pitch Ubisoft delivered at Microsoft Advertising's Gaming Upfront presentation in New York this evening. In-game advertising is rapidly growing, but has typically been relegated to sports and racing games. Splinter Cell Conviction breaks convention by being neither. Expect both static and video ads to appear throughout the environment -- including during the game's lengthy torture sequences. Perhaps they should take it one step further: Sam Fisher should grab a Coca-Cola bottle, smash it, and use the broken glass to kill a guy. Talk about refreshing!

In addition, Ubisoft showed potential advertisers the "heat maps" they created whilst developing the game. These maps highlight likely places players will go while playing. Advertisers will be able to place their ads in high-density areas, in order to ensure maximum exposure to their brands while in the game world. Considering Splinter Cell is a stealth game, don't be too surprised to see ads inside of the conveniently accessible (not to mention remarkably roomy!) air ducts.

If you think that's depressing (and it is).. then consider that Tony Hawk Ride is not being sent out to reviewers for reviews. Reviewers will be allowed to play the game, supervised, for three hours from noon until 3pm on the day that the review embargo ends, at 5pm. Ie, pre-write your review. Ie, use your preview text. Ie, which is always positive.

Game journalism is a joke.

Yeah, yearbook pics or memory, that was... that was pretty much it.

That's just the tip of the iceberg really, I mean the innernet was a broad seismic shift for so many things but none larger than teenage masturbation. It was hard to even buy playboy without ID for fucks sake,other-kids-dads porn stash was the best you could hope for, now you guys have access to hardcore porn of every stripe 24 hours a day, anytime anywhere. We had to beat off to national geographic and Sears. Sears! I'm getting angar just typing this, its not fair. What the point of even trying to explain what it was like, this is what it will be like for a pre-singularity intelligence to explain what it was like in the "before time" to a post-singularity being of pure energy. "It was different.", that's all you can say.

Spielberg.

I like how less functionality is somehow going to be the future of games.
